MicroBurst Thunderstorm
On August 19,2008 at approximately 3:15 pm the Acushnet Police Department received unconfirmed reports of a severe weather event in the area of RT 105 and Main Street. It was later determined by Allen Dunham of the National Weather Service Forcast Office (NOAA) located in Taunton MA, that the storm the Acushnet area experienced was a straight line microburst (A microburst is a very localized column of sinking air, producing damaging divergent and straight-line winds at the surface that are similar to but distinguishable from tornadoes which have a rotating column of air.) The storm had a broken path between 3 and 4 miles with approx a 1/2 mile width. The strongest winds between 80 - 100 mph were located at the beginning of the path and at the end. The path started in the area of the town beach located on Lake St and continued north and then south, south-east towards Perry Hill Rd. This storm created significant damage to trees and some homes, no injuries were reported at this time.
The Acushnet Police Department was forced to close Main St north of Perry Hill Rd including Leonard St, Lake St, Quaker Ln and Robinson Rd after 3:15 until approx midnight the night of the storm. The Acushnet (D)epartment of (P)ublic (W)orks worked throughout the following days to clear storm debris from the roadway.
