Press Release

SUB: Holiday Spirit?
DATE: October 13, 2008

This weekend the Acushnet Police Department made arrests in two cases involving people lacking the Halloween spirit. On Saturday October 12th at approximately 1 PM Officer Derek Cathcart and Detective Paul Melo arrested 54-year old Debra Sylvia of Cottage St. New Bedford and her 33-year old son Brett Sylvia for (1) Larceny over $250 and (2) Conspiracy at Keith’s Tree Farm on Main St.

Mrs. Sylvia and her son Brett were caught with a stolen digital camera and $60 that was taken from the victim’s diaper bag. The victim and her family were on the hayride when the larceny occurred. Mrs. Sylvia and her son Brett were trying to conceal the stolen camera in a sweater that belonged to one of Brett’s minor daughters who were present during the larceny.

Police received reports last weekend of people breaking into vehicles at Keith’s and stealing cash and other items. This weekend police had extra patrols at Keith’s and the other family farms in Town. We would like to remind everyone to lock their vehicles at all time and keep a close eye on their possessions.

Chief Michael G. Alves
