"Providing a safe environment for the education of our children"
Detective Paul Melo, SRO
Due to unanticipated budget deficiencies, the Acushnet Police Department will not be able to provide the service of a School Resource Officer, for the upcoming school year. Detective Melo will return to uniform patrol, rather than being posted at the town’s two schools. Should a problem arise in the school and the police are needed, Uniform Patrol Officers will respond.
The Acushnet Police Department, along with the Acushnet
Public School system has sponsored a School Resource Officer
since 1995. The police officer assigned to the
school's work with the students, staff and administration,
in a collective effort to enhance safety in and around the
school. The officer is a sworn police officer who has
been trained and is a current member of the National
Association of School Resource Officers.
The goal of the program is to build a bond between students,
staff and administration, by day-to-day informal contact.
The School Resource Officer, (SRO) is assigned to the school
and assists as needed, anything from methods of
instruction's with health class, to anti bullying
assembly's, safety lectures, crime prevention issues,
attendance problems, or any other concerns that may arise
during the school day. It is believed that the SRO's
only purpose is to provide security for the school, but the
purpose goes far beyond those needs.
Too often the interactions between the police and the
general public are during times of problems or despair.
By allowing the SRO to be at the school, students have the
opportunity to use the SRO as a resource and assist in an
early form of prevention and build a positive bond between
the police and the community.
If you have any
questions or concerns, the SRO, Detective Paul Melo, can be
